Business is a team sport. Selfishness tears teams apart.
Everybody benefits from those who went before them.
Success comes from a blend of luck and skill.
As good as you think you are, someone out there is better than you.
Your employees can't protect you from your own stupidity unless you let them.
If you think you work hard, your competitors are working smarter.
Your career "brand" is a reflection of your work ethic, quality of work, ability to get along with others, ability to lead, management skills, and technical ability.
Leadership is partly an art and also a science. Leadership skills can be taught. It is not innate, and it takes practice.
As often as not, it is better to do nothing rather than inflict more harm by doing something. Performance reverts to the mean (i.e., people who are struggling will often improve back to their average performance levels without intervention).
Hope is not a plan. You have to work hard to ensure success.
When it is time to act, act decisively and don't second guess yourself. There will always be time to correct mistakes later.
Everybody makes mistakes. Be kind to others when they do.
Don't bring problems to your boss to solve. Bring solutions, recommendations, or suggested solutions.
Never play the victim, especially if you're the boss. It's one of the most unflattering things you can do, and it diminishes your power.
In order to accomplish anything, you have to have (1) motivation, (2) the ability and know-how to carry out the task, and (3) access to the resources needed to carry it out. Lack any one of these and the mission fails: Motivation, Ability, and Resources.
